What Does a Home Thermostat Do?

For your HVAC system to disperse the comfortable temperatures of air throughout your home, you need a thermostat. This exceptional little device controls the heating and air conditioning systems in your home, and with a wide range of models offering various features, you have plenty of options.

How Does a Thermostat Work?

Wondering how does a thermostat works? It’s quite a simple concept, actually.

First, there’s this bimetallic strip made from two different types of metal laminated together. When heated and cooled, it contracts and expands. The choice of metals for this strip is intentional – each one has a unique expansion and contraction rate.

When the coiled strip is heated, the interior metal expands, causing the strip to unwind. Attached to the center of the coil is a temperature adjustment lever. At the end of the coil, there’s a mercury switch, which tips from side to side as the coil winds and unwinds.

Here’s the process: turn up the heat, and the coil and mercury switch rotate to the left. Once the switch tips left, currents start flowing. This current energizes a relay, kicking the heater and fan into action. As the room warms and the coil unwinds, the circuit breaks, shutting off the heat.

A wired thermostat is designed for a system with five wires:

  • The ‘G’ wire signals the fan to switch on.
  • The ‘W’ wire activates the heating system.
  • The ‘Y’ wire toggles the cooling system on and off.
  • The ‘RC’ wire is connected to the 24VAC transformer and works with the air conditioning system.
  • The ‘RH’ wire originates from the 24VAC transformer and is associated with the heating system.

HVAC Zoning System

Ever heard of an HVAC zoning system? It employs multiple thermostats wired to a control panel. This panel operates the dampers within the ductwork of your forced-air system. Depending on your thermostat’s settings, the specific temperature readings from various zones will cause the ductwork dampers to open or close.
